We recently took on a restaurant design project. The task was to revitalize the existing Aluna Drinks Bar, transforming it into Bao Chao, an enchanting Chinese restaurant.
The Vision
The goal was to redesign the space, maximizing seating capacity while creating an ambience that seamlessly blends traditional Chinese elements with modern design principles. A key component of the project was developing a lighting plan to complement the new layout and implementing a colour and design scheme that would resonate with the essence of a Chinese restaurant.
Our Approach
We embarked on a meticulous journey of transformation, adhering to a detailed plan that involved several critical steps:
- Removal of the Existing Infrastructure: The first step involved dismantling the current bar setup and the unused planters that occupied valuable space. This was crucial to making way for a fresh layout and design tailored to Bao Chao’s requirements.
- Installation of New Structures: The introduction of new walls was pivotal in redefining the restaurant’s layout, optimizing the space for increased seating capacity and fluid movement within the restaurant.
- Crafting the New Bar: A centrepiece of any restaurant, the new bar at Bao Chao was not just about aesthetics but functionality. It included comprehensive plumbing and electrical work to ensure it met the operational needs of a busy dining establishment.
- Aesthetic Overhaul: The front-of-house areas underwent a complete decoration makeover, embracing a theme that marries the rich heritage of Chinese culture with contemporary design. This involved the careful selection of colours, materials, and textures in creating a welcoming and immersive dining experience.
- Unique Design Elements: To enhance the visual appeal and provide guests with memorable experiences, special features were incorporated. A striking timber upright feature wall added a touch of elegance and warmth, while a bespoke pagoda was constructed, serving as a picturesque backdrop for guests to capture their moments at Bao Chao.

The transformation of Aluna into Bao Chao by Mobius stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and innovation in construction and design. The project not only revitalized a space but created a destination where the essence of Chinese culture and modern dining converge, offering guests an unparalleled experience.
